The Accokeek Foundation will honor Thomas V. "Mike" Miller, Jr., President of the Senate of Maryland, with its National Conservation Leadership Award. The award will be presented on Friday, November 6, at the Accokeek Foundation's Leadership Salute dinner at the National Harbor.
On the green front, the Foundation is offering a "Going Green" Home School Day. Children will leave with a greater appreciation for conservation methods and sustainable living.
Just for gardeners, the Foundation is holding a Tree Pruning Workshop. In this hands-on class we will discuss tools, ground-based pruning methods, when to prune, and important safety information.
For those with an interest in colonial life, the Foundation is holding three decidedly different events. If your interest lies in textiles, visit during Mrs. Bolton's Spinning Frolic. To learn how to make colonial style candles, sign up for the Colonial Candle-Making Class. And to learn all about food on the eve of the American Revolution, visit during our Colonial Foodways program.
And finally, the Foundation is offering two special volunteer activities for the civic minded. Join us at the Ecosystem Farm for a day of volunteering on a sustainable, organic farm. Or get involved in living history with the Stitch 'N Time Textiles Club Volunteers!

The Accokeek Foundation is pleased to honor Senator Miller for his many contributions to environmental conservation, historic preservation, and the advancement of broader understanding of Maryland's history. Senator Miller is a longtime friend and supporter of the Accokeek Foundation's work. He served on the Accokeek Foundation's Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2006 and has supported the Foundation's new Education Center and other initiatives such as museum interpretation and local history programs.
Former recipients of the National Conservation Leadership Award include Robert G. Stanton, former Director of the National Park Service; John M. Derrick, former chairman and CEO of Pepco Holdings; Steny H. Hoyer, Majority Leader, U.S. House of Representatives; Gilbert Gude, former Member of Congress; the Mount Vernon Ladies Association of the Union; Willem Polak, President of the Potomac Riverboat Company; and Glenn Eugster, retired Assistant Regional Director for Partnerships, National Park Service National Capital Region.
The Accokeek Foundation joins House Majority Leader Congressman Steny Hoyer, honorary dinner chair, in inviting the public to be part of this exciting event. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served at 6:30pm, followed by a program and dinner catered by Susan Gage at 7:00pm. Leadership Salute contributions help to ensure high-quality, affordable education opportunities for families in our community.
