Dear Accokeek Foundation Friends and Guests,
With a heavy but hopeful heart, I write to our larger community and share my condolences for all affected by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge last week. I am grateful that our elected officials are partnering with the federal government to bring funding to restoration efforts while our communities and nation endure the emotional and economic toll from this accident. Simultaneously, we at the Accokeek Foundation acknowledge the social vulnerability that this collapse highlights. I've spent the last 15 years here, seeing firsthand how powerful it is to amplify the stories of people and populations who have been historically underrepresented. As the nation looks closely at such complicated topics of prevention and repair, we also acknowledge the tragedy inflicted on the immigrant community. Immigrant workers are essential to our infrastructure, culture, and tenacity as a country. We hope that their lives and their losses are fully represented in real-time, as we grieve, not in histories retold by our next generation.
The Patapsco River holds many stories of strength for Indigenous communities, including Piscataway, Lumbee, and Susquehannok People. Now, another story of loss and recovery will flow through these waters, which connect our communities. Immigrants, both new to the area and generations-old residents, are working with the armed forces and Indigenous wisdom keepers to rebuild a safe passageway for all who rely on the river.
All of us can find ways to be a part of this collaborative effort, as it embodies the resilience and determination of our community to overcome adversity and restore the health of the Patapsco River. Today, I ask that you consider ways to support by looking at the resources listed below. Through shared knowledge and collective action, we will ensure that the river remains a vital lifeline for both people and wildlife, preserving its strength and significance for generations to come.
